Training For Real Life — From Family Homes to Professional Roles
We breed for temperament first so training has something solid to build on. Training at Metro K9 then serves three essential purposes:
Proof
Training validates our breeding by testing temperament, nerves, and clarity in real environments.
Preparation
Training creates well-mannered, reliable family dogs that are calm at home and confident in public.
Capability
For professional guardians and working homes, training extends into advanced control and role-specific skills.
This is one training system, applied with intention—whether your dog’s future is family life, sport, or professional responsibility.
Personal & Family Protection
Controlled, reliable protection on command. Your dog learns to deter, hold, and release on cue—only when you need it.
Scent Detection & Search
Narcotics, explosives, or specific odor targets. Search patterns, indication, and proofing in buildings, vehicles, and open areas.
Criminal Apprehension & Patrol
Bite-work, suspect containment, and handler backup. Police-style patrol obedience for serious protection roles.
Tracking & Trailing
Human scent tracking and trailing. Lost persons, search and rescue foundations, or sport tracking.
Obedience — Basic to Advanced
On and off leash, generalized to real-life situations so your dog performs when it matters.
Behavioral Rehabilitation
Aggression, fear, reactivity, separation anxiety. We identify triggers and teach alternative behaviors.
Our Dog Training Philosophy
Clear, humane training that transfers to everyday life.
We believe reliable obedience comes from clarity, consistency, and real-world repetition. Our approach blends hands-on experience with evidence-based principles of canine behavior. We tailor tools, drills, and pacing to your dog’s temperament and your goals—whether that’s a family companion, competition dog, or protection prospect.
In practice, that means
- Clear markers and predictable rules your dog can follow
- Structured reps in real settings (home, street, public spaces)
- Right tool, right timing, right task—used humanely and effectively
- Written practice plan for owner transfer and long-term success
Training focus
Communication, timing, proofing under distraction, and ethical tool use. Owners are coached alongside their dogs so progress continues between sessions.
Board & Train (Stay & Learn)
Designed for owners who want calmer behavior, reliable obedience, and clear communication—without juggling daily training sessions. Your dog lives and trains on-site at our Randolph, New Jersey facility, working daily with professional trainers in a structured environment that accelerates learning and builds consistency. We accept a limited number of dogs at a time, ensuring focused attention and results that transfer cleanly back into the home.
Most behavior issues come from inconsistency. Board & Train removes that variable. By living with our training team, your dog receives clear expectations, repetition, and calm guidance—the same standards we expect owners to maintain at home.
What makes our program different
- Small program size (no volume training)
- Calm, real-world obedience—not drills for show
- Clear owner handoff so results don’t disappear
- Training that supports family life and public reliability
How Stay & Learn works
Minimum stay: Most dogs benefit from a minimum three-week stay; length depends on temperament and goals.
Daily structure: Professional training sessions, structured exercise, appropriate social exposure, and downtime.
Owner transition: Before your dog goes home, we teach you the same handling and communication we use, so progress doesn’t stop at pickup.
What dogs learn
Foundational obedience: Sit, down, place; leash manners and recall; impulse control and focus; door and household behavior.
Advanced obedience (when appropriate): Structured heeling; duration and distance work; distraction proofing; off-leash reliability.
Behavior support: Jumping and pulling; mouthing and nuisance barking; anxiety and reactivity; boundary and routine issues.
Family & personal protection: By evaluation only, for appropriate dogs and owners.
Program length and pricing vary based on your dog and goals. Enrollment is limited. Call or text us at (201) 230-2285 to schedule a free evaluation.
Training Formats
Private lessons, group classes, and board & train—we match the format to your dog and your goals.
Private Lessons
One-on-one attention for specific goals, behavioral issues, or advanced work. Tailored to your schedule and your dog’s pace. Learn more about private obedience.
Group Classes
Group classes bring dogs and people together in a controlled, public-style setting with multiple trainers. Dogs practice correct greeting manners, leash/dog manners, and obedience around other dogs (on and off leash) while people walk past. We progress from fundamentals through proofing up to off-leash obedience (reliable recall, leave-it/outs on cue, and calm transitions).
Board & Train
Your dog stays with us for an intensive Stay & Learn program. Daily professional training, customized plan, progress updates, and owner handoff. See above for full details.
A training community, not just a program. Our training is open to our own dogs and client dogs alike. Families and handlers at all stages are welcome into a shared environment built on consistency, clear communication, and mutual respect—focused on long-term success, not quick fixes.
